A PAINTING DYNASTY

D. Zelinsky & Sons, Inc. was founded in 1884 by David Zelinsky (Kenneth Zelinsky’s great Uncle) and established its first office in Oakland, California then shortly after moved its offices to San Francisco. D. Zelinsky & Sons became one of the largest painting contractors in the United States with offices in San Francisco, Los Angeles (California), Sacramento (California) and associate offices in Seattle (Washington), and Washington, D.C.

Ken Zelinsky started with D. Zelinsky & Sons, Inc. after his service with the U.S. Marine Corps. He began as an apprentice painter in 1957. After serving his apprenticeship and working as a job foreman, Zelinsky entered into estimating, and shortly afterward assumed the responsibility of branch manager of the firm’s Sacramento operations.

In 1971 D. Zelinsky & Son’s opened its branch office in Honolulu Hawaii with Ken Zelinsky as the Vice President and General Manager of operations. In four years with long hours, tenacity, and dedication, Ken grew the Hawaii operations to a workforce of 60 men, and increased the volume of work approximately 10 times.

In 1976 Ken Zelinsky purchased the Hawaii branch and continued the legacy as D. Zelinsky & Sons of Hawaii, Inc. Ken continued his success in the business with the help of his secretary Constance “Hap” Fischer and life long partner “wife” and his superintendent Sung Man U, known as “Johnny U”. Ken knows that it takes a dedicated team to build a successful company, and without the help of his key employees it would have never happened.

Today Ken is grateful to be working along the side of his daughter Lari Zelinsky-Bloom and his son-in-law John Bloom. John and Lari moved to Hawaii in 2002 to learn the business, and help Ken slow down so he and Hap could enjoy their retirement years.

Lari is Vice President / Operations Manager, and John works as Director of Business Development and Project Manager. As a husband and wife team they work together with the same commitment and dedication as Ken illustrated when building the Hawaii operations. As the fifth generation of the Zelinsky heritage, John and Lari plan to continue the business and the legacy onto the future. John and Lari also know that they are only a small part of the continued success, and that it will take a dedicated and loyal team of employees to carry the company into the future.

OTHER BUSINESS

The Zelinsky family also owns the Lazy Z Resort, in Twain Harte, California, which was once owned by Ken’s father, Harold Zelinsky and operated as a guest ranch. Ken’s oldest Son Stephen Zelinsky lives and operates the resort, along with running his painting business (S.K. Zelinsky Painting). Ken’s youngest of his three children, Mathew Zelinsky, also lives on the resort property, and is a sergeant with the Tuolumne County Sheriff Office. Mathew is also involved with the family business and is very talented in the construction field. It was Matt’s carpenter skills that remodeled the cabins on the resort.
